Artist Biography
Amanda Walling’s unique and whimsical illustrations, paintings, and mixed-media projects are the result of 20 years of study and practice in a variety of the visual arts including painting, architecture, and photography, among other formats. Walling started drawing at the age of 13, outlining Sunday comics’ characters in a sketchbook. She was exposed to digital art at 14 years old and spent 15 years as a graphic design artist for businesses across the United States. Her love for drawing never stopped and Walling spent several years studying architecture wherein she worked to perfect her pen-and-ink skills. Walling admits she likes to have fun with her work as well as she likes viewers to engage with her pieces. The natural world constitutes the majority of her illustrative work and adds to the quirky depictions she creates. Walling serves as the President and CEO of the Broward Art Guild and is a member of ArtServe of Florida, both organizations to promote art as a profession. Previous community outreach memberships included the Young Professionals of the Chamber of Commerce in Fort Lauderdale and Emerge Broward, a division of the Leadership Broward Foundation.
Artist Statement
The art that I produce is conceptualized around the struggle to be accepting of faults—in ourselves, in each other, and in the world around us. The natural world, often painted for its perceived beauty, is full of negative emotions ranging from jealousy, gluttony, and hate, among others. My work takes a comical approach to recognizing this negativity through exaggeration and whimsy. The aim is to produce an image of acceptance at the complex and harsh situations presented in each piece.
